Permanent hair removal
We have several lasers for hair removal: Alexandrite, Nd:YAG and IPL device.
Alexandrite and Nd:Yag laser are the most effective treatment we have today to reduce hairs in chosen areas. They are used for light skin types and dark skin types, but only remove pigmented hairs. They cannot remove white, light blond or red hairs.read more
The laser light passes through the surface of the skin into the hair follicle where it is absorbed and transformed into heat. This heat causes damage to the hair leading to its destruction. Only hair that is actively in growing phase will be affected. At any given time, only about 80% of our hair is actively growing. Since the hair grows in crops, it is necessary to treat multiple times to be effective and to damage each crop of growing hair. Depending on the area to be treated an average of 4-6 treatments, with minimum 4 up to 8 weeks intervals, is most effective.
Permanent hair reduction is defined as “the long-term, stable reduction in the number of hairs re-growing after laser treatment”. It does not necessarily imply the elimination of all hairs in the treated area. Some areas respond very well to laser treatments and hairs are permanently removed, but areas where the hair growth is influenced by hormonal factors (face for example) may be more difficult and require maintenance sessions.
It is important not to pluck or wax hairs 4 weeks prior to the laser treatment as the presence of the hair root is requested for the treatment to be effective. The day before the area should be shaved to have a pinpoint hair at the moment of treatment. A numbing cream may be applied for patient comfort.
Depending on the selected area the treatments takes from less than 15 min up to 60 minutes. For larger areas, cold air is applied over the skin during the treatment to provide comfort.
Immediately after, the skin is slightly red and swollen around the hair follicles, This is easily relieved by application of a soothing cream.
The treatment will either be performed by Dr. Dierckxsens or by one of her experienced staff.
